The DMCA (Digital Millennium Copyright Act) has bugged me in a big way since it became law. I am not against legislation needed to protect artists but there is one glitch included that claims to be a protection for artists that instead has served primarily as a control roadblock inserted to appease terrestrial radio and the corporations that own all the major labels, while slowing the growth of digital. I could list dozens of examples after 17 years building music programming at satellite radio and the 6 prior internet radio for Rykodisc and CMGI’s “dot bomb” iCast, which I still maintain was years ahead of the curve. The subject is entirely too lengthy to get into here and the last thing any of us need at this point is another conspiracy theory, so I will boil it down to the essence. Without a “waiver” you can only play 4 songs from any individual artist and/or album in any consecutive 3 hour period and no more than 3 of the same consecutively at any time. Why? Think about it and feel free to reach out with questions.
The topic above is front of mind due to the impact it still has over the content on this episode, as we attempt to pay tribute to the passing of a pair of vital artists that have left for the After Party, Carla Bley and Dwight Twilley. On the surface it would appear they have little in common, but I have always maintained the philosophy that music should not be something rigidly categorized into specific genres, or even “good” or “bad” as it is a subjective art. You either like or appreciate it or you don’t. That is all that matters and both Carla and Dwight had a specific and singular approach to their respective artistry. Welcome to Emaline Pillchert as our new London correspondent with her Carla Bley feature, and listen for Dwight and even Dick Clark when Twilley becomes the subject. New releases include Glen Hansard, Bombay Bicycle Club, The Rolling Stones, Orbital, Dylan LeBlanc, Mike Adams at His Honest Weight as well as a blistering live performance from Prince & The New Power Generation. Thanks for the support and encouragement, but most of all for your ears and heart.
