Certainly not a new release but I finally replaced an import album that I thought I would never find again. The original members of Spirit reformed for this record in 1983. Randy California, Ed Cassidy, Jay Ferguson, Mark Andes and John Locke. It originally came out on UK label Bam Caruso allegedly at the insistence of Julian Cope. I've always had a soft spot for their remakes of a few Spirit classics here. The album was released in America the following year as "Spirit Of '84" with a different cover and disappeared quickly.
The debut solo album from Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers’ Benmont Tench, You Should Be So Lucky, will be released on February 21, 2014. Produced by legendary producer Glyn Johns, the album was recorded to tape at Sunset Sound in Los Angeles and features Tench handling lead vocals, piano and organs, joined by a team of collaborators including a core band of Don Was, Ethan Johns, Blake Mills and Jeremy Stacey and contributions by Ryan Adams, Gillian Welch & David Rawlings, Joel Jerome, Tom Petty and Ringo Starr.
At least once a year I get stuck in the Spirit section of The Basement. How this band is not regarded with the same reverence and respect as (in my opinion) many of their peers continues to puzzle me. They were years ahead of their time... hell the intro for "Stairway To Heaven" was unquestionably inspired (i.e. nicked) from Randy California's "Taurus".... click below for proof.
Can't believe I went more than a month without posting but I've been in dental reconstruction hell, as well as very busy at work. That said, here's a few new and old things that I've been cranking in the Basement Studio recently.
