We say goodbye to 2019 and the great Neil Innis with Episode 76 of From The Basement. Happy New Year to all and thanks from the bottom of my heart for all the support, which has allowed me to continue this project and continue to recover. My daughter Anastasia joins briefly with a set for the year, and there’s even hidden bonus material following the usual Zappa closing. See you all next year and let’s all hope the best days are truly ahead. Love…. Mike.
A huge thanks to those who have joined Mixcloud Select and a great big hug and kiss for those that continue to support the show through our regular link at (https://paypal.me/pools/c/8beKwFWlHR). You are truly making it all possible. This time around we have audio history with fresh remasters from The Rolling Stones, Flamin’ Groovies and Be Bop Deluxe, new efforts from Alex Chilton, Greg Dulli, Bria Skonberg, Robbie Robertson and tribute to Mose Allison featuring Taj Mahal, Iggy Pop and Fiona Apple. The Firesign Theatre stops by to cheer us up and we hear from Little Richard, Jackie & The Starlites, Cannonball Adderley, Morphine, David Sylvian, Utopia, Mountain, Joe Cocker and plenty more. We begin with a segment centered on the Waterboy’s classic “The Whole Of The Moon” in honor of the final big moon of the decade.
Here's another exclusive for my Mixcloud Select subscribers. The full 6 hour morning show from The Loft from December 11, 2017. Turn back the clock exactly two years. My head positively spins at what has transpired since... it seems like a lifetime ago and last week at the same time. I'll post the playlist from the show below, but you will need to be a Select Subscriber in order to stream it. Thanks to those who have already signed up and continue to support my activity.
For the first episode after becoming “Select” we dig into the new Super Deluxe Edition of Prince’s “1999” and a beautiful expanded edition of “What Is Dream” from one of my favorite bands, Mercury Rev. There’s also a great new compilation from Jon Savage that yields old faves from Crazy Horse and Detroit (featuring Mitch Ryder), a new Ben Lee cover of Built To Spill and a big band tribute to The Allman Brothers. Warren Zevon makes a long overdue appearance and Graham Parker shows up by request to mix and mingle with Wondermints, Wonder Stuff, XTC, REM, MMJ, old pals Winter House and Rachael Yamagata, Dennis Wilson, The Strawbs, Marshall Crenshaw, a new Mobile Fidelity release from Dire Straits, Wilco, The Members and World Party, to name but a few. We bid a tearful farewell to the great Iain Sutherland and a big hello to all of you. Thanks for the support and for listening.
